Search for Intelligence

The science known as SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) deals with searching for messages from aliens. This can be done in an active way ("Active SETI"), in which signals get sent, aiming to attract the attention of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (ETI) and to trigger a reaction. Alternatively - in the disciplin called "Passive SETI" - we only search for messages, without sending any signals as a potential trigger for any type of reaction.

From a philosophical point of view we might regard Passive SETI as driven by optimistic hopefulness, whilst Active SETI could already be seen as an act of desperation.

The biggest question remains: What if ETI listens but simply doesn't want to respond?
